Systane Eye Care

Systane is a range of lubricating eye drops made by Alcon, designed to relieve the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. The range includes several formulations suited to different levels of dry eye severity: Systane Ultra provides fast, long-lasting relief for moderate to severe symptoms and is compatible with contact lenses. 

Both Systane Ultra and Systane Hydration use polyethene glycol (PEG) and propylene glycol (PG) as lubricants, forming a protective shield over the eye surface for fast relief from dryness. Systane Hydration has minor differences in the ingredients but uses the same lubrication system. Ultra offers more temporary relief compared to Hydration 

PureFlow Technology is the patented dispensing system used in Systane Ultra Preservative-Free, which allows the product to be delivered in a multi-dose bottle without the need for preservatives. The bottle uses a one-way valve that only allows a single drop out at a time, while ensuring there is no backflow. This maintains the sterility of the solution throughout the bottle's lifespan without any chemical preservatives, making it suitable for wearers with sensitive eyes or preservative intolerance who need drops multiple times a day.

Systane eye drops can be used as often as needed throughout the day. Systane Ultra Preservative-Free, in particular, has no restrictions on frequency of use. For preserved variants like the standard Systane Ultra bottle, drops are suitable for regular daily use, but if you need them more than four to six times a day, it is worth speaking to your optician. Persistent symptoms at that frequency may indicate a dry eye condition that benefits from a more targeted treatment plan rather than ongoing lubricant use alone.
