Total Care Contact Lens Solutions

Total Care is a contact lens solution range from AMO (Johnson & Johnson Vision), specifically designed for rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses. The range includes Total Care Cleaner, which removes protein, lipid, and microbial deposits from the RGP lens surface through a manual rub-and-rinse step, and Total Care Wetting Solution, which conditions and stores lenses overnight. RGP lenses require a dedicated care system; standard soft lens solutions are not appropriate for use with them.
No. Total Care solutions are formulated exclusively for rigid gas-permeable and hard contact lenses. They should not be used with soft or silicone hydrogel contact lenses. The chemistry and cleaning agents in RGP solutions are optimised for the surface properties of firm lens materials and are not appropriate for soft lens materials. If you wear soft lenses, you need a solution designed for soft lenses.
Apply a few drops of Total Care Cleaner to the palm of your hand and place the RGP lens on top. Rub with your fingertip using circular motions for 20 to 30 seconds on each side to loosen deposits. Rinse thoroughly with your rinsing solution, then store in Total Care Wetting Solution overnight. Use Total Care Cleaner every time you remove your lenses; skipping the cleaning step allows deposits to build up on the lens surface, reducing comfort and performance of the lens.
Both Total Care and Boston Advance are two-step RGP care systems that include a dedicated cleaner and a conditioning or wetting solution. The key difference lies in the specific formulations. Both systems are well established and effective; the choice often comes down to personal preference or your optician's recommendation based on your specific lens material. Vision Direct stocks both ranges for RGP lens wearers.
Replace your lens case every one to three months, even if it looks clean. The cases naturally harbour dirt over a period of time, which can contaminate lenses and solution even when the case appears clear. After each use, empty the case fully, rinse with fresh solution, and allow it to air dry face down on a clean tissue. Never wipe it dry, as this can spread contamination, and never store it sealed in a bag, as enclosed damp environments encourage microbial growth.
