PreserVision is a range of eye vitamin and mineral supplements made by Bausch + Lomb, developed for people concerned about age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The range is based on formulations derived from the AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study) and AREDS2 clinical research, large-scale studies that identified specific nutrients shown to support eye health in later life. PreserVision is available in three formats: Original Soft Gels, Lutein Soft Gels, and Tablets, each providing a different nutrient blend. The range contains antioxidant vitamins C and E, zinc, and either beta-carotene or lutein depending on the formula.

PreserVision is specifically formulated for adults at risk of, or already experiencing, age-related macular degeneration. It is particularly relevant for people over 55, those with a family history of AMD, and those who have been told by an ophthalmologist that they are in an early or intermediate stage of the condition. PreserVision is not a treatment for AMD, but the AREDS research found that the specific combination of nutrients it contains can help to slow progression in certain at-risk individuals. You should always consult your optician or GP before starting PreserVision to confirm it is appropriate for your situation.

PreserVision Original Soft Gels are based on the original AREDS formula and contain beta-carotene alongside vitamins C and E and zinc. PreserVision Lutein Soft Gels replace beta-carotene with lutein, following the updated AREDS2 research. The change matters because high-dose beta-carotene has been associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers and former smokers, so PreserVision Lutein is the recommended option for that group. For non-smokers, both formulas are appropriate, but many eye care professionals now favour the lutein formula in line with the more recent AREDS2 findings.

It is important to check for nutrient overlap before combining PreserVision with other supplements, as the formula already contains high doses of vitamins C and E, zinc, and other nutrients. Taking multiple supplements containing the same nutrients can lead to excessive intake. Speak to your GP or pharmacist before combining PreserVision with any other vitamins, minerals, or supplements. If you take a multivitamin, your healthcare professional can advise whether PreserVision provides benefits above and beyond what your current routine already delivers.

PreserVision Soft Gels use a gelatin-based capsule, which means they are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. PreserVision Tablets do not use a gelatin capsule and may be more suitable if you follow a plant-based diet, though you should check the full ingredients list to confirm suitability. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, check the packaging carefully before purchasing, or speak to your pharmacist for guidance on finding an alternative eye health supplement with a vegetarian or vegan-friendly formulation.
