Despite snow storms battering the UK this week, have faith, spring is coming and there's lots of reasons to be cheerful. Blossoming flowers, Easter chocolate and a hint of sunshine are just around the corner. However, there is one downside; the dreaded spring clean.

No doubt it’s satisfying once it’s all done but the annual clean-a-thon can be a little draining and no-one likes to fork out for cleaning products. With this in mind, we’ve put together some cleaning hacks guaranteed to save you time, effort or money. Hopefully you can put them to good use and make your spring clean a bit more bearable!

Sponge in microwave

Get more from your sponges

Given how we use them, it’s no surprise that sponges can gather a lot of bacteria. When you’re all ready to start your big clean, the last thing you want to do is use a dirty sponge or be forced to head out to buy a new one.

Fortunately, all it takes is a little trick and your sponge will be as good as new. Give it a good soaking in water then put it in your microwave for 1 minute. This will zap all the bacteria, leaving you with a pristine sponge to get started with. Add a squeeze of lemon juice to your sponge for an extra fresh citrus scent while you clean.

Use shaving foam to clean your mirror

The mirror above the sink is vulnerable to all kinds of splashes, smudges and finger prints. Problem is, just wiping it with water and cleaning spray often ends up making things worse, resulting in more marks and a blurry reflection.

A simple resolution may be right in front of you. Cover your mirror with shaving foam and give it a wipe to battle those bothersome blemishes. The soap contained in the foam’s formula creates a protective film over the mirror which will also help prevent it from fogging up in the future.

Get stainless steel sparkling again with olive oil

Using a small amount of olive oil on a cloth is a cheap and effective way to get the stainless steel on your hob and other kitchen areas sparkling and shining again, without having to spend money on potentially pricey polish.

Once you’ve wiped away any marks finish off by going over it with a paper towel for a smooth finish that will return your hob to its former glimmering greatness.

Plates in dishwasher

A dishwasher isn’t just for dishes

If you’ve got a dishwasher, why not make the most of it and use it for other things rather than dishes? It takes away a load of hassle for you and it can be used on a wide range of household objects.

When you’re giving the fridge a good clean, don’t waste time on scrubbing your shelves. Just pop them in your dishwasher and you can be sure that they’ll be completely clean without having to do much at all. It’s great for other items such as contact lens cases (if you replace it every 3 months) and detachable showerheads, too.

Lint rollers are perfect for lampshades

Lampshades gather dust easily and can be awkward to clean. Their shape and material can make removing dust with a typical cloth or duster a little bit tricky. Rather than wasting time and energy using traditional tools, you might already have something in your house that makes it easier.

Lint rollers that you use on your clothes work well on shades, picking up loads of dust without any hassle, meaning your lamps can once again shine bright and light up your living spaces.

Cleaning the oven

Steam clean your microwave

Microwaves make everything so quick and handy, we often forget that they need a bit of looking after too. When you’re using one regularly, it’s easy for food stains to build up. When these dry, it can be a bit of a pain to get rid of them.

For this problem there’s a simple solution, and you can make it out of things you’ll probably have in your cupboard. Grab a microwave-proof bowl and add a couple of cups of water to tbsp of white vinegar. Then, tip in a few drops of olive oil, before placing it in the microwave for 5 minutes. This will steam clean the microwave, leaving it ready for a simple wipe clean to finish it off.

Make your own solution

As we’ve shown in the microwave, often you’ve got the ingredients to make an effective cleaning solution just lying around the house. There’s lots of different recipes online, but most call for mixes of water, vinegar, baking soda and oil.

Making a solution from these will save you money on other cleaning products and means you don’t have to put up with unpleasant odours. If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, you can use lemon or orange to mask it with a fresher, citrus scent.

Hopefully you’ll find that these tips make your spring cleaning a little easier. Remember, the quickest and easiest way to reorder your contact lenses is with Vision Direct.
